Suez Canal Blocked Again

The Suez Canal, which connects the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean, has once again stranded a freighter! The Suez Canal Authority said on Monday (9th) that a cargo ship carrying Ukrainian grain ran aground in Egypt’s Suez Canal on the 9th, temporarily disrupting traffic in the waterway vital to global trade.

The Suez Canal Authority said the cargo ship “M/V Glory” ran aground due to a “sudden technical failure”. Usama Rabieh, chairman of the canal authority, said that the ship has now de-baked and refloated, and has been towed away by a tugboat for repairs. The traffic on the canal has not been affected by the grounding.

Fortunately, the situation was not serious this time, and it only took a few hours for the authority to help the freighter out of trouble. Suez Canal shipping service provider Leth Agencies said the freighter ran aground near the city of Kantara in Ismailia province along the Suez Canal. Twenty-one southbound vessels will resume passage through the canal, with some delays expected.

The official reason for the grounding has not yet been stated, but it is likely to be related to the weather. Including the northern provinces, Egypt has experienced a wave of severe weather in recent days, mainly strong winds. Leth Agencies later released a picture showing that the “M/V Glory” was stranded on the west bank of the canal, with its bow facing south, and the impact on the canal was not serious.

According to VesselFinder and MarineTraffic, the vessel was a Marshall Islands-flagged bulk carrier. According to the data registered by the Joint Coordination Center (JCC), which is responsible for overseeing the implementation of Ukraine’s grain export agreement, the stranded cargo ship “M/V Glory” was 225 meters long and carried more than 65,000 tons of corn. On March 25, he left Ukraine and sailed to China.
