Russian Wine Exports to China Up 6.5% in 2021

Russian media reports, data from the Russian Agricultural Export Center shows that in 2021, Russia’s wine exports to China increased by 6.5% y/y to US $1.2 million.

In 2021, Russian wine exports totaled $13 million, an increase of 38% compared to 2020. Last year, Russian wines were sold to more than 30 countries, and China’s total imports of Russian wines ranked third.

In 2020, China was the fifth largest wine importer worldwide, with a total import value of US $1.8 billion. From Jan. to Nov. 2021, China’s wine import volume was 388,630 kiloliters, a y/y decrease of 0.3%. In terms of value, China’s wine imports from Jan. to Nov. 2021 amounted to US $1525.3 million, a y/y decrease of 7.7%.

Industry insider forecasts, by 2022, the global wine consumption is expected to exceed US $207 billion, and the overall wine market will show a trend of “premiumization”. The Chinese market will continue to be strongly impacted by imported wines in the next five years. In addition, the consumption of still and sparkling wines in China is expected to reach US$19.5 billion in 2022, compared to US$16.5 billion in 2017, second only to the US (US $39.8 billion).
